In other words, we want to build capacity, not dependency.
I get stressed and anxious and my performance suffers
You are not alone! Many people get stressed, anxious and nervous before competing and it can negatively affect the ability to function in high-demand environments.
Mental Skills Training provides tools and techniques to help manage pre-competition stress; developing skills to cope and use it to help rather than hinder performance.
Consistent practice of techniques like self-talk, biofeedback and breathing can be part of the solution to managing your stress levels, allowing you to be closer to your best more often.
I get distracted and lose focus which hurts my performance
The human brain is a wonderful supercomputer. Its design prioritizes our protection and it loves novelty. However, when we find ourselves in stressful situations, those two attributes have a tendency to work against our best interests; misperceiving competitive stress as threatening and distracting our attention from what we actually need to focus on in that situation.
Mental Skills Training can help “update” our brain’s software and empower us with tools to stay focused on the task-at-hand, and not get hooked by internal or external distractions.
Building skills through consistent practice of attention & awareness training, performance cues, imagery and more can enhance our focus on what’s relevant and helpful right now to boost our performance closer to our potential.
My performances are inconsistent and my confidence swings through highs & lows.
There can be many sources of inconsistent performance like fear of failure, pressure of others’ expectations, or overly-critical self-talk.
Mental Skills Training can address these issues through identifying cues for performance under the athlete’s control like effort, pre-performance routines and mental rehearsal of successful performance.
I’m sick of being stressed about my performance. I feel burnt out.
It can be hard to stay motivated when the pressure to perform seems overwhelming; relentless schedules and constant expectations take a toll.
